BIOGRAPHY

Lina Chang is an artist & designer based in Northern California. Born in 1987 and raised in sunny San Diego, she spread her wings and landed in Santa Cruz where she received a B.A. in Art and a B.S. in Legal Studies from UCSC. When she is not painting, she continues her love of art using the digital medium.

When I begin a painting, my ideas are not always clear. Although the themes I work with are present, the forms and connections spark as the paint builds organically. As the colors mix and the composition emerges, the concept and the ideas become more coherent with each new layer. From this idea, I produced a variety of outlets and venues that expressed the themes I am working with, which also include: the masculinity and power struggle of our society, human vs. nature relationships, hunter vs. pray, animals used as décor, and slain animals. I feel that many people forget that we ourselves are an animal species.

In my work, I am influenced by the human and animal relationship. This has become an underlying theme for most of my work. It has truly become an exploration of our race and I want to comment on our own animalistic tendencies.

The animals come alive in the wood and tell their story of slain and slaughter. A sort of liberation, using the wood to connect back to nature, where they were so violently kidnapped from.
Where the women of my pieces become trapped. They go back to an animalistic and carnal world. But the horns are an adornment and comment on our indulgence.
